“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”- Wayne Gretzky
In the past year, I have achieved what many people, including myself, fear and put off even if they are miserable-I changed careers. It was a welcome change and I am loving every single second of it. I feel in my soul that I have found what I was looking for and I absolutely love it. I am now a real estate agent in the state of Delaware.
In May of 2018, I had come to a fork in my journey. It was either I was going to continue on the path that I had been involved in my whole life and knew I wasn’t happy on or I was going to find something that has always been there but I never listened to my heart. I have been in the restaurant industry since I was 15, it was all I really knew. I had dabbled in other industries- retail, hotel management but I always found myself drawn back to the restaurant. Mostly I think because I am addicted to the cash. As a server it is hard to get used to not walking out at the end of the day with cash in my hand. However as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown tired of being covered in flour from pizza shops or smelling like a kitchen every time I left work. I was ready for a change.
At that time I was going to interviews wherever I could doing anything that wasn’t a restaurant. I love DIY projects so I started down that path, looking for anything that I could do that was creative. I didnt have much luck. So, I decided to try supply stores. At least I would be out of the restaurant and I could get a discount on materials I use for my handmade business. I remember the day clearly, I had just interviewed at Lowes and I had been offered the job right on the spot. I remember thinking this should feel great, I was finally going to get out of the resturant! But for some reason it didn’t feel like that. Something was telling me this wasn’t the answer either.
Mike and I had talked about real estate many times prior to that day. It was rolling over in my head on my drive home from the interview at Lowes. I called Mike and told him I was going to stop at a real estate office and see if anyone was looking for an assistant. I thought to myself, I will take whatever I can get even if it doesn’t pay. The first office I walked into, I was offered an internship. I was estastic! As soon as I walked out of the office I called Lowes on the drive home to turn down the position. I thought “this is great! This is exactly what I want to be doing.”
I wish I could say that this internship turned out to be everything that I had hoped for and more, but it didn’t. It was just another step on the path. Empty promises and driving all over creation had made it a hard situation for my family. I was never home and I also wasn’t making enough money to leave the restaurant. I was more stressed than ever but you know what they say it is the darkest before dawn. The team I was on was not a fit for me however what I learned from the experience was that I loved real estate. I decided to take the plunge go out on my own and go get my real estate license.
I touched on how stressful that time was here.
Fast forward a few months and I had passed my test and gotten my real estate license. In October I left the team that I was on with Keller Williams and shortly after I changed brokers to eXp Realty. It was the best decision I could have made for myself. I love everything about this company, it is internet based, so all of my training and meetings are online. eXp has an online world that includes your own avatar. You can meet people from all over the country all from the comfort of my home and most importantly I make my own schedule.
It is great for when you having a lazy morning and don’t feel like getting dressed up for a meeting because I can be sitting in my pajamas with a cup of coffee listening to amazing training or talking to someone in a completely different state. They have no idea that I’m not even dressed for the day yet. Agents are quickly starting to realize that brick and mortar brokerages are becoming a thing of the past. Stores like blockbuster are being replaced by Netflix, Sears and big box stores are being replaced with Amazon. It is only a matter of time before brokerages follow suite. At eXp agents don’t pay desk fees and the software and systems that are provided are far better than any brokerage I have found so far. Did I mention company stock shares are included in every closed deal?! I feel like I could talk about this great company for hours but I won’t do it here. I will write more about eXp and my experience with the company in future posts. However, if you want to know more and don’t want to wait feel free to reach out to me and I would be happy to share the great benefits this company has and how it has changed my real estate career for the better.
Fast forward to today, I work from home in my office that Mike built for me. I have an AMAZING mentor that I can talk to daily if needed or call anytime I have a problem. It has been such a great experience to be mentored by someone who is so positive and uplifting. I can’t say enough about how important this has been for my training and success. She shares her listings with me so I can market properties before I get listings of my own. My first closing was a friend of mine at the restaurant. It was such a great experience for my first deal to be someone I knew. Having a prior relationship helped calm my nerves and made me feel more comfortable so I could focus more on the transaction. I was able to learn so much and get a lot of kinks out before I worked with someone new. I feel like now that I know what I am doing and how to process a transaction I can focus more on building relationships and trust with new clients.
Mike and I have started working with photography and videography to promote my business. We invested in cameras and equipment. We even got a drone and Mike is taking a class to get his pilots license. The drone has been so worth it. The photos and videos we have done with it have grabbed so much attention. It has been such an amazing feeling to see videos that we produced get so many views and feedback on social media. Take a look at our first video we produced from an open house I hosted:
All in all, I believe I have found a career that makes me happy and I can see myself enjoying for a long time. The feeling of being apart of the biggest decision most people make in their life is hard to describe. I love being able to help my clients find their dream home!
